Data management for biological research¶

BioRails has been designed to support non-routine biological research such as in vivo and pharmacology studies. It focuses on helping scientists to be more productive in their research. BioRails is delivered in two versions using dual licensing, an open version based on the open source core of BioRails which is freely available under the terms of the GNU public license, and a commercially supported enterprise version under a commercial license. The core product delivers a combination of protocol-driven structured data capture and linked content to record observations and conclusions as articles, files and images. The link between structured and unstructured data facilitates data-mining and analysis.

Project¶

The project section is used to communicate the results of business analysis; the high level requirements, personas and use cases. The enterprise version is based on the open source product enhanced with a set of enterprise plug-ins available through a support contract with TheEdge.

Modules¶

BioRails is composed of a number of modules which are deployed as plug-ins to a core administration application.

Development¶

BioRails is a data-driven application developed using Ruby On Rails. This means that it is a zero-client web application persisting data in a relational database such as MySQL or Oracle. It provides an extensive web services API for integration with external applications such as BioRails4Office which facilitates inter-interoperability between MS Excel and Word and BioRails.
